« Thank God For Music » est la huitième chanson du 20e album studio solo de Ringo Starr, What’s My Name, paru en 2019.
La chanson a été coécrite par Ringo Starr, Grant Michaels et l’auteur-compositeur américain Sam Hollander. Ce dernier est également l’auteur de « Better Days », autre titre figurant sur What’s My Name. Contrairement à « Better Days », entièrement écrite par Hollander en s’inspirant de propos tenus par Ringo lors d’une interview, « Thank God For Music » est née d’une véritable collaboration : Hollander avait déjà commencé la chanson lorsque Starr y apporta sa propre contribution.
Sam Hollander, c’est vraiment une sacrée trouvaille. Je ne le connaissais pas et lui ne me connaissait pas non plus. Il avait dit à quelqu’un qu’il aimerait travailler avec Ringo. Cette personne en a parlé à Bruce Grakal, mon avocat, qui m’en a parlé à son tour. Je lui ai répondu : « Je ne sais pas trop… Bon, d’accord, faites-le venir. On va discuter. » Nous nous sommes installés dans une pièce de la maison et nous avons bavardé pendant environ une heure. Puis je lui ai dit : « Voyons ce qu’on peut faire. Il y a une guitare là-bas. » Il m’a répondu : « Je ne joue pas de guitare. » « Pas de problème. On va aller au studio, il y a plein de pianos. » « Je ne joue pas de piano. » Alors je lui ai dit : « D’accord. À vendredi, et amène ton guitariste. » C’est comme ça qu’est née « Thank God For Music ». Il avait déjà commencé la chanson et j’y ai apporté ma contribution.
Il est effectivement revenu avec un guitariste… qui jouait formidablement bien du piano. Et c’est ainsi qu’avec le piano et la batterie, nous avons enregistré la piste de base.
