JOHN LENNON – making tea at Paul’s house Liverpool April 1963, Dezo Hoffmann Photograph

Black and white first generation silver gelatin print. Complete with studio stamp. Measures approx. 12 x 16 inch. (30.5 x 41 cm) From the Alan Robertson Collection of Dezo Hoffmann photograph. The prints in the present collection date from this period, 1983-1986, when Hoffmann chose to utilise the professional services of Alan J. Robertson of AJR Photographic, one of Britain’s leading monochrome hand-printers and processors, to prepare the prints for his books and for his exhibitions. The relationship between Hoffmann and Alan Robertson grew, in the three years they worked together, from mutual professional respect to warm friendship. Robertson’s admiration at Hoffmann’s photographic genius was reciprocated by the older man’s pleasure in Alan’s ability to coax the very best prints from his negs, many of which were taken in the field under less than perfect conditions and most of which adhered to Hoffmann’s singular dictum of seldom using a flash. As each book and exhibition progressed, Hoffmann presented Robertson with a selection of the spare prints accumulated during the process of collation, and it is these that this lot comes. Following Hoffmann’s death in 1986, Alan Robertson continued his work in specialised monochrome printing, processing and restoration, and expanded his work into other areas, including acting as technical advisor on such mainstream films as Photographing Fairies and Fairytale, producing the necessary prints and plates. The photo was taken by Dezo Hoffmann himself, and are printed top the specification dictated by Hoffmann to robertson, when selecting unique section prints from larger negatives, for his John Lennon and Paul McCartney books and exhibitions of his work. £150-200
