Il aura donc fallu plus de quarante ans pour que l’offense faite aux Beatles soit réparée. Et c’est Paul McCartney, l’un des deux survivants, avec Ringo Starr, du groupe britannique qui va laver l’affront. Avec une trentaine de musiciens, McCartney se produira jeudi 25 septembre au soir au parc Hayarkon de Tel-Aviv où quarante mille personnes sont attendues pour ce concert baptisé « L’amitié d’abord ». Les spectateurs ont payé le prix fort (entre 150 dollars et 450 dollars) pour faire oublier à McCartney que les autorités israéliennes s’étaient comportées de façon pitoyable avec les Beatles en 1965 lors de l’annulation d’un concert prévu le 5 août au stade Ramat-Gan près de Tel-Aviv. Yaakov Schneider, ministre de l’éducation de l’époque, avait été tenu pour responsable, en tant que seul autorisé à donner son accord pour la production de groupes étrangers en Israël. Golda Meir (1898-1978), l’ancien premier ministre, avait été montrée du doigt : elle aurait déclaré que les Beatles représentaient « une culture dégénérée ». Et des parlementaires de la Knesset avaient estimé que ce concert pouvait « corrompre l’esprit de la jeunesse israélienne ».
Les débats avaient duré des mois. Il y eut plusieurs résolutions de différents comités invoquant « l’hystérie et les désordres massifs » que pourrait causer la venue de la célèbre « bande des quatre ». Le porte-parole du ministère de l’éducation avait finalement répondu que « tout le monde pense que leur show n’a aucun mérite artistique et qu’il s’agit d’une hystérie de masse infectieuse ». Le député Uri Avnery avait eu beau faire remarquer que la reine d’Angleterre avait conféré des titres de noblesse aux Beatles. Rien n’y avait fait. Finalement, le 27 janvier 2008, Ron Prosor, ambassadeur d’Israël en Grande-Bretagne, remet à Julia Baird, demi-soeur de John Lennon, assassiné à New York en 1980, une lettre d’excuses à l’occasion d’une visite au Musée des Beatles à Liverpool. George Harrison est mort d’un cancer en 2001. Un acte de contrition des autorités israéliennes à l’occasion du soixantième anniversaire de la création de l’Etat juif auquel Ringo Starr n’a pas répondu. Paul McCartney et son entourage occupent vingt et une suites d’un grand hôtel de Tel-Aviv. Jeudi soir, la plupart des clubs de la ville côtière seront fermés. Le concert de McCartney fera l’événement et n’a pas suscité, cette fois, d’opposition. Le chanteur a annoncé la couleur dans un entretien au Jérusalem Post : « Je suis plutôt apolitique et mon message est un message de paix. »
