L?idole pop des années 60 Paul McCartney a visité Bethléem mercredi avec un « message de paix » pour les Palestiniens et les Israéliens, la veille de son concert prévu à Tel Aviv.
Sur la place Manger, les fans ont regardé McCartney entrer dans l?Eglise de la Nativité, construite sur le site où Jésus serait né.
A l?intérieur de l?église, les curieux ont vu McCartney allumer deux cierges « pour la paix ».
Alors qu?il partait, des badauds lui ont demandé de répondre aux critiques qui disent que son arrêt en Israël « soutient l?occupation israélienne de la Cisjordanie », ce qu?il a contesté.
« Je suis ici pour mettre la situation en relief et dire que ce dont nous avons besoin dans la région, c?est de paix », a dit Mc Cartney, « une solution à Deux Etats ».
Les militants palestiniens auraient fait pression sur McCartney pour qu?il annule son voyage en Israël, ce que le chanteur a « refusé ».
« Je fais ce que je pense, et j?ai beaucoup d?amis qui soutiennent Israël », a déclaré McCartney à un journal israélien deux semaines avant sa visite à Bethléem.
Quelques jours plut tôt, un prêcheur islamique, Omar Bakri, a dit que selon des sources britanniques, McCartney ne serait pas en sécurité en Israël.
« Si McCartney tient à la vie, il n?ira pas en Israël », aurait-il menacé. « Au lieu de soutenir le peuple de Palestine qui souffre, McCartney célèbre les atrocités des occupants », a dit Bakri.
Le musicien a dû passer par deux checkpoints armés pour arriver au mur d?entrée de la ville, que la plupart des voyageurs doivent traverser à pied pendant leur trajet de 8km depuis Jérusalem.
En 2002, Israël a commencé à construire la « barrière de sécurité » de 8m de hauteur entre Bethléem et Jérusalem, dont Israël prétend qu?elle est sa capitale. En 2004, le mur a été déclaré illégal par la Cour Internationale de Justice, l?organisme judiciaire le plus élevé des Nations Unies.
Quelques heures après que McCartney ait quitté la ville, les forces israéliennes ont envahi Bethléem et attaqué des maisons dans le camp de réfugiés de Duheisha. Pendant l?incursion, les soldats ont kidnappé un adolescent palestinien et l’ont emmené en un lieu inconnu.
