A la veille de son premier concert en Israël, Paul McCartney a souligné mercredi qu’il était porteur d’un message de paix au Proche-Orient, rejetant toute critique liée à sa venue dans la région.
L’ancien Beatle s’est rendu à Bethléem en Cisjordanie, où il a notamment visité la Basilique de la Nativité. Il a pris des photos et déposé deux bougies en différents endroits de l’édifice, précisant à chaque fois qu’il s’agissait d’une initiative « pour la paix ».
Après avoir été immortalisé en compagnie d’admirateurs de tous âges devant l’église, il a été appelé à répondre aux critiques de certains Palestiniens qui considèrent sa visite en Israël comme un signe de soutien à l’occupation de la Cisjordanie. Il a souligné que son déplacement mercredi en Cisjordanie démontrait qu’il ne faisait pas de favoritisme. « Je suis ici » pour « dire que ce dont nous avons besoin, c’est la paix dans cette région, une solution à deux Etats », a-t-il dit en référence à Israël et à un Etat palestinien.
« Je suis critiqué partout où je vais, mais je n’écoute pas » ces critiques, a ajouté l’ex-Fab Four. « J’apporte un message de paix, et je pense que c’est ce dont a besoin la région ».
Paul McCartney est arrivé mardi soir en prévision d’un concert prévu ce jeudi dans le plus grand parc de Tel Aviv.
Il y a une quarantaine d’années, le gouvernement israélien avait interdit un concert des Beatles, jugeant que la prestation du groupe pourrait porter atteinte à la moralité de la jeunesse israélienne.
