Sa photo est partout, dans toutes les poses, brandissant sa célèbre guitare Rickenbacker, le sourire toujours adolescent, alors que les radios déversent ses tubes: Sir Paul a conquis Israël.
McCartney, 66 ans, accompagné d’une cour d’une centaine de personnes, dont 30 musiciens, a non seulement pris d’assaut un des hôtels chics du bord de mer à Tel Aviv, mais tout le pays qui vit depuis plusieurs jours au rythme de ses mélodies.
La star, dont c’est la première visite en Israël, se produira jeudi soir dans un parc de Tel Aviv. Rarement, en Israël, terre de controverses et de polémiques, une personnalité étrangère aura fait une telle unanimité autour d’elle. Des ministres, des députés, toutes tendances confondues, des hommes d’affaires, figureront parmi les quelque 50.000 fans attendus au Hayarkon Park, au coeur de Tel Aviv, pour l’écouter. Pour 1.000 euros, ces VIP auront le privilège d’approcher Sir Paul à … une trentaine de mètres. Les autres, qui n’ont payé que dix fois moins, s’entasseront sur la pelouse pour profiter des enchaînements d’accords du plus célèbre des musiciens gauchers.
Aux journalistes et fans venus l’accueillir, le pape de la pop a affirmé vouloir apporter « un message de paix et d’amour ». « Cela va être un concert historique », s’enthousiasme Benny Dudkevitch, un journaliste à la radio publique, un spécialiste des Beatles. « En Israël, il y a eu Elton John, Madonna ou Eric Clapton. Mais McCartney, c’est autre chose, une légende vivante », ajoute-il. Des commentateurs prévoient même quelques évanouissements de jeunes filles pendant le concert, mais très probablement moins que lors du passage des Fab Four à l’Holywood Bowl, en août 1964. Fan absolu, le très viril Yonathan Zerbib, ne parvient pas à maîtriser son émotion. « Pas question que je n’y sois pas. Ce concert va être l’un des plus grands moments de ma vie », assure ce quinquagénaire chômeur qui affirme écouter au moins une fois par jour « Abbey Road ». Tous les journaux ont consacré plusieurs pages à l’ex-Beatles, faisant état de son « message de paix » ou laissant entendre, avec humour qu’il pourrait s’adresser au public israélien par un retentissant « Hey Jews », sur l’air langoureux de « Hey Jude ». Toutes les radios, publique et militaire, ont consacré des émissions entières à l’ex-Beatles, relatant avec force détails les péripéties de l’annulation du concert prévu des Fab Four en 1965. A l’époque, les autorités israéliennes considéraient le groupe avec méfiance et craignaient un message dévoyé susceptible d’effets négatifs sur la jeunesse israélienne.
Seul point noir au concert de jeudi soir à Tel Aviv: les menaces de quelques islamistes contestant la venue de la star en Israël. Jouer en Israël à l’occasion des 60 ans de son indépendance plonge l’ex-Beatles, qui a donné en 2000 un concert retransmis dans l’espace, au coeur d’une planète qu’il n’avait encore jamais explorée: le Proche-Orient et son conflit centenaire.
« La presse a fait état de menaces de mort à son encontre et ses enfants lui ont demandé de ne pas venir en Israël. Mais, il répète qu’il vient livrer un message de paix », explique Dudkevitch. A quoi McCartney réplique, sur son site internet : « La musique, c’est bon pour l’âme des gens. Sans musique, le monde serait épouvantable, nous aurions plus de problèmes. La musique peut aider les gens à se calmer ». « Je cite toujours une chanson de John (Lennon) », ajoute-t-il, « Give Peace a Chance ».
