La publication de Flowers in the Dirt
Il est important de réaliser que lors de lors de l’enregistrement de « Flowers in the Dirt », Paul McCartney avait déjà en tête le lancement de sa tournée mondiale, et a donc tenu à ce que les musiciens qui l’accompagneraient lors de cette tournée participe à l’enregistrement. Dès lors, on retrouve sur « Flowers in the Dirt » Hamish Stuart, Robbie McIntosh, Chris Whitten, Paul « Wix » Wickens et naturellement Linda McCartney.
Afin d’assurer le prélancement de l’album, le single « My Brave Face » aux sonorités empreintes Beatles fut publié dès le début 1989. Ce premier single rencontra un succès immédiat, se positionnant en 25eme place des charts américains, et 18eme des charts anglais.
Enfin, le 5 juin 1989 fut publié l’album. Entrant directement en 1ere position des charts britanniques, le disque reçut une moisson de critiques positives, faisant oublier le très dispensable « Press to Play ». De l’autre côté de l’Atlantique, aux Etats Unis, le disque reçut aussi un accueil enthousiaste, se plaçant 21eme dès sa publication, et restant plus d’un an et demi dans les charts.
Le deuxième single, extrait de « Flowers in the Dirt » reçut également un très bel accueil, « This One » se plaçant en effet 18eme dans les charts Anglais. Les singles suivants quant à eux (« Figure of Eight », « Put It There » ) eurent un succès moins retentissant.
Quelques semaines après la publication de « Flowers in the Dirt », le 26 septembre 1989, Paul donnera le coup d’envoi de sa tournée mondiale, qui passera par l’Amérique du Nord, l’Europe, le Japon, et le Brésil.
Il est à noter que la couverture du disque est une photo prise par Linda McCartney, d’une toile de Brian Clarke, qui fut chargé des décors de la tournée mondiale.
Zoom sur le World Tour Pack et édition japonaise
« Flowers in the Dirt » étant l’album défendu à l’occasion de la tournée mondiale de Paul, il eut le privilège de bénéficier d’une édition limitée, commercialisée en octobre 1989 en Grande-Bretagne (et en janvier 1990 aux Etats-Unis). Cette version comportait un single bonus (« Party, Party » mixé par Bruce Forest ) .
Il est à noter que le public japonais quant à lui eut aussi droit à un traitement privilégié, en bénéficiant, avec l’édition CD ? d’un CD bonus, comportant le track-listing suivant :
