« Broomstick » est une chanson enregistrée lors des sessions de l’album « Flaming Pie » de 1997, et publiée en tant que face B du single « Young Boy ». La chanson a fini par être l’un des trois candidats Paul McCartney / Steve Miller pour l’album « Flaming Pie » ; les deux autres, « Young Boy » et « Used To Be Bad », ont été retenus sur l’album.

On a juste inventé ça. J’ai dit : « Voici une petite piste rythmique », et il a commencé à jouer de la batterie, puis à chanter. Nous ne savions pas ce que nous faisions – nous jammions juste et ne nous inquiétions pas de ça… c’était bizarre parce que c’était juste une fuite de la fantaisie, mais une des choses à propos de Paul est que son imagination est si grande, en tant qu’auteur. Quand quelqu’un s’assoit et balance ça, on se dit « Wow, d’où ça vient ? ».

Broomstick » a été inclus dans la réédition 2020 de « Flaming Pie » mais n’a pas été remasterisé. Pour promouvoir cette Archive Collection, une version instrumentale a été publiée sur le site RollingStone :

[…] La version inédite de « Broomstick » présentée ici en avant-première, qui ne figurera pas sur le coffret, est une jam instrumentale entièrement acoustique qui ne met en scène que McCartney et Miller. Comme il l’a fait sur ses deux albums McCartney – sur lesquels il a enregistré lui-même la guitare, la basse et la batterie – McCartney s’occupe de l’essentiel du travail, tandis que Miller joue de la guitare. Cette version est également dépourvue des effets sonores qui clôturaient la version la plus connue. […]

Le titre provisoire du morceau était « Slow Blues ».
