« Rock Around The Clock » est la dernière chanson de l’EP Change The World de Ringo Starr, paru en 2021.
Le titre est difficile à traduire littéralement sans perdre son sens. L’expression évoque l’idée de « faire du rock toute la nuit », voire « danser au son du rock sans s’arrêter ». En français, il est toutefois préférable de conserver le titre original, devenu l’un des plus célèbres de l’histoire du rock ’n’ roll.
Un classique des débuts du rock ’n’ roll
« Rock Around The Clock » a été écrite en 1952 par Max C. Freedman et James E. Myers.
La version la plus célèbre fut enregistrée en 1954 par Bill Haley and His Comets. Le morceau connut ensuite un immense succès international, atteignant notamment la première place des classements aux États-Unis, au Royaume-Uni et en Australie.
Son utilisation dans le film Blackboard Jungle en 1955 contribua largement à sa popularité et à son association avec l’explosion du rock ’n’ roll auprès du grand public.
Ringo Starr reprend un standard de sa jeunesse
Le choix de cette chanson par Ringo Starr n’est pas anodin. « Rock Around The Clock » appartient à la génération de disques qui ont contribué à populariser le rock ’n’ roll au moment où le jeune Richard Starkey découvrait la musique américaine à Liverpool.
Pour cette reprise, Ringo est accompagné notamment de Joe Walsh à la guitare et de Nathan East à la contrebasse, tandis que Bruce Sugar tient le piano. Amy Keys et Windy Wagner complètent l’ensemble aux chœurs.
En terminant Change The World par ce standard, Ringo Starr revient ainsi à l’une des sources mêmes du rock ’n’ roll qui avait marqué sa jeunesse.
