« Let’s Be Friends », que l’on peut traduire naturellement par « Soyons amis », est la troisième chanson de l’EP EP3 de Ringo Starr, paru en 2022.
La chanson a été écrite par Bruce Sugar et Sam Hollander, deux collaborateurs réguliers de Ringo Starr.
La naissance de « Let’s Be Friends »
Ringo Starr a expliqué que la chanson s’inscrivait parfaitement dans le message général de EP3, fondé sur la paix, l’amour, l’amitié et la nécessité de changer les choses :
« Quand on écoute cet EP, on retrouve la paix et l’amour, “Let’s Be Friends” et l’idée de changement. Tout doit changer. Au fond, toutes les chansons expriment le même sentiment, simplement de manière différente.
Pour “Let’s Be Friends”, j’ai pensé à un ami à moi, Sam Hollander. C’est un producteur et un auteur-compositeur, et ces derniers temps il vit à New York. Je me suis dit : “Je vais appeler Sam pour voir s’il aurait une chanson.”
Mon ingénieur Bruce Sugar lui a envoyé une piste de piano dans ma tonalité, et Sam en a fait “Let’s Be Friends”. Tout s’est fait très naturellement. Il devait justement venir de New York à Los Angeles avant même que nous ayons ajouté quoi que ce soit sur la chanson. Il était donc là pendant la séance, il a participé aux chœurs, et j’ai ajouté la batterie. J’ai simplement enregistré la batterie, les percussions et le chant. »

« Soyons amis »
Le titre résume parfaitement le message de la chanson : « Soyons amis ».
Ringo Starr souligne d’ailleurs que les morceaux de EP3 partagent tous un même état d’esprit, même si chacun l’exprime différemment. « Let’s Be Friends » reprend ainsi l’un de ses thèmes les plus familiers : privilégier l’amitié, la paix et le rapprochement plutôt que les divisions.
La chanson est également née de manière très spontanée. Une simple piste de piano envoyée par Bruce Sugar à Sam Hollander a servi de point de départ, avant que Ringo n’ajoute son chant, sa batterie et ses percussions.
