Barb Jungr’s first album of Dylan has become a cult classic.Man In The Long Black Coat pays tribute to her musical hero in his 70th birthday year with a new compilation of her favourite Dylan songs. This album marks a culmination of a decade-long love affair with Bob Dylan;as Barb states Once I had started singing Dylan’s songs I couldn’t stop’. Barb’s unique interpretations of some of Dylan’s most popular songs draw on the huge range of influences she has absorbed during her varied and extensive career, from cabaret to European jazz. Man In The Long Black Coat’ offers a fascinating insight into one artist’s obsession and exploration of another’s works. Her imaginative re-workings, which give a female’s perspective on a traditionally male body of work, not only reveal her passion for Dylan’s songs but also her great skill as an interpreter and singer. Man In The Long Black Coat’ includes four never before recorded tracks: Sara, Man In The Long Black Coat, It Ain’t Me Babe and With God On Our Side.Except for Dylan himself on a good night, this is the best way to hear his songs.(four stars)The Independent. One of the strongest voices in international cabaret performance. Critique
I just hope that Dylan himself has a listen and starts writing for her direct. –The Observer
What to do if you admire Bob Dylan’s songs, but not his singing? Barb Jungr laid out her stall almost a decade ago with her gorgeous disc Every Grain of Sand. Just in time for the great man’s 70th birthday, she returns with a pensive, unfailingly literate collection drawn from her more recent recordings, with the addition of four newly recorded tracks, including the haunting title number and a delicious version of Sara. Jungr never follows the obvious route: the subtle criss-crossing of jazz, folk and rock influences may well give purists nightmares. The lyrics glow even brighter, however, and the musicianship is never less than first-rate. –The Sunday Times (Clive Davis) – 29 May 2011
