L’histoire de la chanson

Cette chanson possède apparemment la plus longue histoire de la carrière des Beatles vu qu’elle fut l’une de leurs toutes premières compositions et l’une des dernières à avoir été publiées. John l’a écrite selon lui en 1959, réussissant pour la première fois à bien s’inspirer du rock’n’roll Américain dans ses compositions. Il existe deux versions officiellement inédites de One After 909 qui furent enregistrées en 1960 par les Beatles, à l’époque où Stuart Sutcliffe était encore bassiste du groupe. La chanson fit ensuite partie de leur set list à l’époque où ils jouaient à Hambourg et à la Cavern de Liverpool. Une autre version jamais publiée sur leurs disques officiels fut enregistrée lors d’une répétition à la Cavern en 1962. Le 5 mars 1963, les Beatles étaient aux studios d’EMI pour enregistrer leur troisième single. Les 2 chansons choisies furent finalement From Me To You et Thank You Girl mais One After 909 fut également enregistrée ce jour là. Ils en firent 5 prises dont aucune ne fut complète. Ainsi la chanson semblait être définitivement abandonnée. Cependant en 1995, un mix des prises 4 et 5 donna une version complète publiée sur Anthology I tandis qu’un autre mix des prises 3, 4 et 5 donna une version relatant les incidents et interruptions des prises et fut inclus sur le même album.

La chanson refit surface pendant les sessions Get Back de 1969 et les Beatles essayèrent de donner à ce titre une nouvelle chance. Ils l’interprétèrent sur le toit d’Apple et cette version devint officielle en 1970 à la sortie de Let It Be.

On peut constater aussi bien en écoutant cette chanson qu’en voyant la séquence dans le film que si Lennon semblait peu motivé par ce projet Get Back, sur One After 909 c’était l’inverse, le temps d’une chanson il retrouvait tout son enthousiasme et tout son dynamisme.
